Tortilla Española

My fall harvest is coming to an end. I’ve dug up the last of the potatoes, which included French fingerlings and Russian blues: It’s been a weak harvest overall, with the cold spring delaying new growth and the lack of rain causing drought conditions and calls to conserve water. I’m grateful for what I managedContinue reading “Tortilla Española”

Autumn Harvest

The unseasonably wet spring meant delayed and diminished crops. My squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers suffered. My reliable vegetables were the French fingerling potatoes and sunchokes. I also planted some warba potatoes, which P got from a friend who’s a commercial farmer. Those were especially creamy in texture. I used the potatoes in chowders. Served withContinue reading “Autumn Harvest”

Curry beef brisket

Curry beef brisket is one of A’s favourites whenever we go to Hong Kong diners. The meat is so tender, the sauce well-rounded, and the heat a low burn. I kept telling him that it’d be easy to make ourselves so I ate my words, tried making it myself using this recipe: https://auntieemily.com/hong-kong-curry-beef-brisket/ The recipeContinue reading “Curry beef brisket”

Arctic Char

Rarely see Arctic Char in the markets, only on the menu at The Sandbar Restaurant, which I thought must have cornered the local market. So surprised to see it fresh not at a fishmonger’s but at the Famous Foods supermarket, which has only one very narrow shelf for fresh fish. They charged $11 for oneContinue reading “Arctic Char”

Crab with New Potatoes

The potatoes I planted four months ago should be ready to harvest soon. I did a test dig to see how the different varieties were doing. Looking pretty good. I boiled the new potatoes with some corn on the cob, and added them to some stir fried crab. Of the different potato varieties, the russetContinue reading “Crab with New Potatoes”

Jacques’ Salade Niçoise

Jacques Pépin has been one of the most active celebrity chefs during the lockdown, presenting cooking demos on Instagram every day or two. Usually, they’re simple recipes that celebrate the taste of fresh veg, fruit, or meat. Today, I tried his Salade Niçoise, named for its origins in Nice. What Jacques does differently is useContinue reading “Jacques’ Salade Niçoise”

Mary Berry in 3 Moves

Any fan of The Great British Baking Show knows Mary Berry. But those in Canada may have missed out on her BBC series Mary Berry Everyday. I’ve just discovered the series on YouTube and am curious to try her recipes, which are simple but look — as Mary would say — scrummy. Aka scrumptious. InContinue reading “Mary Berry in 3 Moves”
